5 Ways to Stay Hydrated During Ramadan

If you are celebrating Ramadan, you are likely to be constantly fighting a battle of thirst from sunrise to sunset.

To help you stay healthy and hydrated as well as get the most out of your workouts we thought we’d share our top Ultimate Performance hacks that we use with our clients every year to help them feel good, workout regularly and keep their body in the healthiest position possible.

1. Don’t drink juices when breaking your fast

Whilst this may be a very traditional way of doing things, drinking your calories is a sure-fire way to exceed your calorie intake. Stick with water – it’s more efficient, essential for almost all of our bodily functions and has no calories!

2. Drink two litres of water at every suhoor

With all of the sugary, salty and tasty food available it’s very easy to confuse excessive hunger for dehydration. Make a point to drink water as often as possible and notice how you naturally eat in a more controlled manner.

3. Prioritise electrolytes

The human body needs electrolytes to function properly. You’ll find electrolytes in fruits and vegetables and the most common types are sodium, potassium, calcium and bicarbonate.

The symptoms of electrolyte imbalance can include twitching, weakness and potentially seizures and heart rhythm disturbances.

Be sure to get hold of some electrolyte powder or tablets and add them to your water when you break your fast or have them in your drink during your evening workouts.

4. Choose foods with a higher water content

Watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupes, grapefruits, pineapples, cranberries, oranges and raspberries all have huge amounts of water in them and taste great.

5. Cold showers

Cold showers can really help during Ramadan. After a few days of fasting, thirst becomes quite a normal feeling so it’s important to look for other signs of dehydration. Cracked lips, fatigue, higher body temperature, flushed skin and a higher pulse rate can all be related to dehydration.

Where possible, take a cold shower and if you can’t do that, wet a towel with cold water and apply it to your neck, around your ears, upper back and chest.
